Citroën Prototype Y

Beginnings of the 1970’s saw Citroën quietly working on the Prototype Y, an internal project tasked with replacing the aging Ami and bridging the gap between the Citroën G-mini and EN101 concepts.
Project goal
Prototype Y was conceived as the direct successor to the Citroën Ami, aimed at keeping the marque competitive in the compact segment. Engineers borrowed heavily from the earlier G-mini and EN101 test beds, pooling aerodynamics, suspension ideas and packaging layouts into a unified small-car package.
Development timeline
Work accelerated at Citroën’s engineering center during the first half of the 1970s. Bench prototypes were evaluated, but none reached public presentation. Before a definitive version could materialize, upper management shifted budget and personnel to the newer Citroën VD project, effectively halting Prototype Y in favor of what would become the Visa.
Legacy
Though it never wore a model badge, Prototype Y fed key structural and packaging solutions into the production Citroën VD/Visa, shaping the small-car architecture that would serve the brand for well over a decade.
