The Citroën C3 I launched in 2002 marked a shift toward bigger, more comfort-oriented superminis for the French marque and quickly gained traction across Europe for its blend of practicality and ride quality.
Introduction
Debuting at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, the first-generation C3 replaced the ageing Saxo and introduced the new PF1 platform shared with the Peugeot 206, positioning itself in the competitive B-segment against rivals like the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta.
Design & Dimensions
With a 3 860 mm overall length, the five-door hatchback offered noticeably more cabin space than its predecessor. The tall-boy roofline maximised headroom, while large windows and a steeply raked windscreen gave the C3 its distinctive, almost mini-MPV silhouette.
Legacy
The C3 I set the template for larger, more comfort-focused Citroën superminis and presaged the brand’s move toward quirky but usable styling that would define later models. It remained on sale until 2009, selling over 1.4 million units and laying the groundwork for successive C3 generations.
