From 1987 to 1989, Shelby Automobiles built the CSX, a turbocharged, intercooled hot-hatch spun out of the Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance. Fewer than 1,000 copies left the factory, making these cars rare benchmarks of late-’80s Shelby engineering.
History
Shelby Automobiles snapped up already-turbocharged Dodge Shadows and Sundances, then added bigger intercoolers, ECU tweaks, and exclusive driveline reinforcements. The cars carried an “CSX” tag—short for Carroll Shelby Export—coordinated by AC Cars in Surrey, England, whose serial numbers flagged which chassis were bound for Shelby’s U.S. facility. Production ended after the 1989 model year, soldering the CSX’s near-mythic low-volume status.
Design & Performance
Externally, Shelby replaced the factory plastic aero pieces with cleaner bumpers and subtle side skirts, topped them with a Shelby fiberglass hood sporting functional vents, and added 15-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. Under the skin the 2.2-liter Turbo II engine, intercooler, and a 5200 rpm redline delivered clearly improved throttle response, while a shorter final drive and Koni dampers sharpened launch and cornering.
Legacy
All CSX examples were delivered through select Chrysler-Plymouth and Dodge dealers, sold on paper as Shadows/Sundances with Shelby option packages—so today most survive as restoration projects among enthusiasts mining obscure dealership microfiche.
