Plymouth Satellite

Introduced for 1965, the Plymouth Satellite crowned the Belvedere line on Chrysler’s B-body platform as the plushest two-door hardtop and convertible you could get before the Fury took over. It lasted only three model years but defined mid-size luxury for Plymouth dealers at the height of the muscle-car boom.
Origins and Positioning
As the successor to the workaday Plymouth Plaza, the Satellite launched as the Belvedere’s flagship trim—available exclusively as a two-door hardtop or convertible for 1965-66. By 1967 a station wagon joined the order sheet, broadening family appeal while a new "Sport" sub-trim added extra gloss and buckets to attract younger buyers.
Design and Features
Styled with crisp creases and a formal roofline, the Satellite set itself apart with bright side moldings, full wheel covers, and upgraded upholstery. Interiors featured vinyl buckets, center consoles, and—on wagons— simulated woodgrain paneling, signaling the brand’s move from budget runabout to aspirational everyday transport.
Short Life and Succession
After only three model years, the Satellite label was retired and the car’s position atop the mid-size charts was assumed by the Plymouth Fury in 1968. The transition incorporated many Satellite cues, making the Satellite an evolutionary stepping-stone that bridged the Belvedere’s practical roots with the forthcoming full-size luxury of the Fury line.
