History
The GTX debuted for 1967 as the Belvedere GTX, slotting above the Satellite and Road Runner in Plymouth’s line-up. Marketed through 1971, it mapped Chrysler’s mid-sixties push to blend refinement with quarter-mile credibility, but tightening emissions and insurance pressures pulled the plug after that short five-year run.
Design & Positioning
Unlike bare-bones muscle rivals, the GTX wore wood-grain appliqué, thick carpeting, bucket seats, and chrome touches inside, while exteriors kept clean lines and modest badging. This up-market approach aimed buyers who wanted V8 punch without sacrificing passenger comfort or distinctive appearance.
Legacy
Although produced for just five model years, the Plymouth GTX represents the peak of the first muscle-car wave, directly predating stricter 1972 regulations. Today clean examples—especially 440 Six-Pack and 426 HEMI cars—command collector attention as benchmarks of 1960s American performance luxury.
