From 1940 through 1988 Chrysler built the Town & Country family, a distinctive line that opened with pre-war luxury wagons and closed with cushy full-size V8 haulers. The nameplate bridged three eras of design and technology before giving way to the modern minivan.
History
Chrysler launched the Town & Country in the 1940 model year as a top-tier station wagon. Production paused from 1942 to 1945 during WWII, then resumed and continued for more than four decades. Positioned above mainstream Chryslers, the model hit its sales stride in the post-war boom when families embraced wood-bodied prestige wagons. By 1988, changing buyer preferences and tightening regulations ended the rear-drive wagon run, clearing the stage for the 1990 front-drive minivan that inherited the badge.
Design & Body Styles
The original woodie wagons featured white ash and mahogany paneling over steel framing, an expensive touch that lasted until the 1950s. From 1947-1950 Chrysler expanded the line with four-door sedan, two-door hardtop and convertible variants, all trimmed with genuine wood or Di-Noc appliqué. After a hiatus, the 1968 re-introduction brought sleeker lines; the 1983-1986 edition added pillarless hardtop wagons and rare K-car convertibles before settling into the final boxy station-wagon silhouette.
Legacy
The pre-1990 Town & Country remains the definitive American wood-grain luxury wagon—coveted by collectors for real wood sides, eight-seat practicality, and torque-rich V8s. It sustained Chrysler’s upmarket image through multiple design epochs and, more memorably, passed a heritage-rich nameplate onto the Town & Country minivan family that dominated U.S. sales through the 1990s and 2000s.
