During the late 1970s transition toward smaller luxury packages, Chrysler introduced the M-body LeBaron, staking a claim in the emerging compact luxury class with crisp dimensions and formal styling cues. This generation bridged the gap between traditional full-size Chrysler sedans and the downsized era that followed.
Design
The M-body LeBaron carried clean, angular sheet metal stretched across a 1885 mm width, proportioned to look substantial on a shorter wheelbase. A stand-up grille, opera lamps, and optional vinyl roof maintained the marque’s established premium cues while trimming hundreds of kilograms from its predecessors.
Generations
Produced only through the M-body cycle, this LeBaron set the template for later front-drive replacements. When Chrysler shifted platforms, the LeBaron name itself continued well into the 1990s on entirely new K- and J-body architectures.
Legacy
The M-body LeBaron proved that American luxury could downsize without abandoning chrome trim and plush interiors, foreshadowing the more efficient yet still well-equipped models Chrysler would market throughout the 1980s.
