Launched in the late 1970s as Chrysler Europe’s bid for a modern compact, the Chrysler Horizon filled the shoes of the Simca 1100/1200 and ultimately handed the baton to the Peugeot 309, bridging American ownership and French engineering in one neat, five-door package.
Genesis and Purpose
After Chrysler acquired Simca in the 1960s, product planners needed a successor to the ageing Simca 1100 and 1200 ranges that could still fight in Europe’s fiercely competitive small-car segment. The Horizon project combined transverse-engine packaging and front-wheel drive in the 3.96-metre footprint, delivering familiar practicality with a fresh, more contemporary look that marked Chrysler’s own stamp on the segment.
Design & Dimensions
Rectangular headlamps and a broad C-pillar gave the Horizon a squared-off profile that looked larger than its 3.96 m length might suggest. At 1.68 m wide and 1.41 m tall, with a kerb weight pinned around 950 kg, the car aimed for interior space efficiency while remaining light enough for economical running costs. The lift-back format continued the practicality legacy of its Simca predecessors.
Transition & Legacy
Within a few years Chrysler Europe was sold to Peugeot-Citroën; the Horizon continued production under the Talbot badge until the Peugeot 309 took over the segment in 1985. By then, the platform and much of its engineering philosophy had quietly merged into PSA’s wider small-car family, making the Horizon a bridge between two corporate eras rather than a long-running standalone model.
