Marketed by Chevrolet from 1985 to 1991, the Sprint was the U.S. face of the Suzuki Cultus—a subcompact created through GM’s alliance with Suzuki and Isuzu to succeed the aging Chevette.
Genesis and Badge Engineering
Within the 1981 GM–Suzuki–Isuzu partnership, Suzuki supplied the new Cultus; GM re-engineered minimal details and shipped it into America as the Chevrolet Sprint. This captive-import approach allowed Chevrolet to field a modern, front-drive city car while development costs stayed low.
Design and Dimensions
The Sprint kept the tall-roof, boxy silhouette of the Cultus, measuring just 1 350 mm in overall height and riding on a condensed platform ideal for tight urban streets. A liftback body style maximized interior volume for the footprint, providing practical cargo flexibility unusual in early-1980s subcompacts.
Brief U.S. Run and Afterlife
Sales spread from the West Coast at launch in 1985 through 1991, after which the Geo Metro badge replaced the Sprint nameplate. The same car continued unchanged in mechanical essence, demonstrating how GM rotated branding within its captive-import strategy while retaining the fundamental Suzuki design.
