Running from 1976 to 1987, the Chevrolet Chevette replaced the Vega and became Chevrolet’s front-engine, rear-drive answer to soaring fuel prices. Its simple three- or five-door hatchback layout aimed squarely at budget buyers and set sales records during its decade on the market.
History
Chevrolet launched the Chevette in North America in September 1975, styling it as the Vega’s economical successor. Built on the General Motors T platform, it was marketed globally under several nameplates, including the Isuzu Gemini in Japan. Over 2.8 million units were sold worldwide before production ended in 1987, making the model Chevrolet’s bestseller in key years of its era.
Design & Dimensions
A subcompact hatchback measuring just 1570 mm wide, the Chevette offered surprisingly usable cargo space through its split-folding rear seat. The wedge-nosed silhouette was clean and minimal, while its lightweight body—underpinned by a live rear axle and MacPherson struts—kept manufacturing costs, and therefore the sticker price, low.
Legacy
The Chevette was succeeded by the Corsa in global markets and is remembered today as the car that kept Americans in affordable Chevrolets at the dawn of the energy-crisis decade. Second-hand survival rates mirror its utilitarian reputation: unloved by enthusiasts yet stubbornly plentiful into the 1990s.
