Since 2012, Chery has revived one of motoring’s quirkiest creations with the modern Moke, a Chinese take on the 1960s Mini Moke that packages beach-buggy charm in a compact city footprint.
Lineage and rebirth
The new Moke resurrects the open-top, utilitarian concept first penned by BMC engineers as a lightweight military runabout. Chery’s 21st-century iteration retains the tiny proportions and open sides but adopts contemporary construction and household-name branding rights secured from the original licensors.
Design & dimensions
At 3.33 m long and 1.66 m wide, the revived Moke is marginally longer yet slightly narrower than its ancestor, while standing just 1.55 m tall. The structure employs a corrosion-resistant steel shell, bolt-on panels, and the signature bathtub-like body with minimal doors and removable soft-top sections, echoing the utilitarian styling of the original without aping every vintage detail.
Global spread
Produced in Eastern China, the Chery Moke is exported to boutique-car distributors and resort-fleet operators across Europe, Australia, and Caribbean islands looking for golf-cart alternatives with colonial chic. Local small-volume assembly lines in France and Brazil have also appeared since 2020 to cater to tight city regulations.
