Since 2017 the Chinese brand Chery has been building the eQ1, a pint-sized battery-electric runabout engineered strictly for crowded megacities and tight parking spaces. Its minimal footprint makes the three-door city car one of the smallest EVs in global production today.
Design & Dimensions
At just 3.2 m long, 1.67 m wide, and 1.55 m tall, the eQ1 is shorter than a Smart ForTwo Cabrio yet accommodates four seats within its high-roof micro-hatch profile. The upright stance and short nose maximise interior volume while keeping weight low, essential for efficient electric urban driving.
Powertrain & Range
Chery fits a single front-mounted permanent-magnet motor paired to a lithium-ion battery pack; exact kWh vary by market revision but city driving ranges of 250-300 km NEDC are typical. Charging uses a Type 2 AC port mounted behind the front Chery badge—an 80 % top-up from a 6.6 kW wall box takes about 4.5 hours.
Generations & Updates
Launched in 2017 as the all-new eQ1, the model has seen running updates each year: 2018 added a slightly larger battery option, 2020 introduced cosmetic LED lighting and an upgraded centre touchscreen, while the 2023 iteration brings subtle styling tweaks and improved software for the Chinese New Energy market.
