Unveiled in 2016 and quietly phased out after 2022, the Cowin X3 was Kaiyi Auto’s first foray into the compact-crossover space under the revived Cowin badge.
History
Kaiyi Auto, a spin-off of Chery established to revive the dormant Cowin brand, launched the X3 in late 2016 as its debut crossover. Positioned below the larger X5, it aimed squarely at city buyers wanting an SUV profile on a tight budget. Production wound down by 2022, marking a relatively brief seven-year production run.
Design & Dimensions
Sized like a European C-segment crossover, the X3 stretched just 4.34 m long, 1.80 m wide and 1.67 m tall. Its upright stance, high shoulder line and faux skid plates echoed current SUV trends while leaving generous ground clearance for urban potholes.
Legacy
Although sales volumes stayed modest and global exports were limited, the Cowin X3 served as the brand’s pilot project for SUV tooling, quality systems and supply-chain learning before Kaiyi moved on to next-generation electric platforms.
