Chery X1

The Chery X1 is the export-market name for Chery’s first-generation city car (originally launched in 2009 as the Riich M1). A small-footprint five-door aimed at budget-seeking drivers, it marked Chery’s first serious push beyond China with right-hand-drive and CKD export kits.
Origin and naming
Revealed in China in late 2008 and launched in 2009, the car debuted as the Riich M1 under Chery’s newly created Riich sub-brand for domestic buyers. From 2010 onward the identical vehicle was exported in kit form as the Chery M1, S18 or X1, depending on market regulations and CKD partner requirements. Italian buyers received local re-assembly by DR Motor as the DR1 between 2010 and 2014.
Dimensions and design
At just 3 866 mm long, 1 622 mm wide and 1 638 mm tall on a 2 330 mm wheelbase, the X1 sits firmly in the A-segment. Short overhangs and roof rails gave it a pseudo-crossover stance, while sliding rear seats maximised the tiny cabin’s flexibility.
Production life
Domestic production finished in 2014 with the withdrawal of the short-lived Riich brand. By then, CKD kits and part-assembled cars had been shipped to more than 20 markets across Asia, Latin America and Europe, providing Chery with practical lessons in overseas homologation and supply-chain logistics.
