Launched just a year after Buick separated from Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company, the 1904 Buick Model B became the marque’s founding product and its first volume car, contributing to the 1908 birth of General Motors.
Origins and 1905 Breakthrough
Built in Jackson, Michigan, the Model B premiered in May 1904. A 1905 New York Auto Show exhibit, personally hosted by William C. Durant, transformed brand fortunes: orders rocketed from 37 cars in 1904 to 750 in 1905.
Engineering Firsts
Hidden beneath its brass-era coachwork sat the world’s first production overhead-valve engine, a two-cylinder horizontally opposed unit making 21 bhp. Power reached a planetary gearbox delivering two forward speeds plus one reverse through a cone clutch.
Price Tag and Shared Bones
Priced at US$950 for a touring sedan, the Model B undercut many rivals. After General Motors acquired Buick, the same chassis resurfaced under the Oldsmobile Model 20, though Olds bypassed the novel OHV engine in favor of its own design.
