Unveiled at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, the EX-E stood out as MG's bold mid-engined concept that channelled Ferrari 308 proportions while hinting at the brand’s next chapter. It never reached showrooms, but its styling DNA quietly resurfaced in the later MG F.
Concept Genesis
Designers Roy Axe and Gerry McGovern shaped the EX-E around a wedgy, cab-forward silhouette reminiscent of contemporary Italian exotics. The project leveraged the mid-engine chassis and running gear of MG’s Metro 6R4 Group B rally car, translating racing hardware into a sleek road-going statement for the motor-show circuit.
Design & Craft
Carbon-fiber-style bodywork clung to a compact 2-seat cockpit, with pop-up headlamps and a vent-sculpted rear deck that previewed 1980s supercar trends. Though labelled only a concept, the EX-E was fully driveable, underscoring MG’s engineering credibility by showcasing the Metro 6R4’s proven drivetrain in a dramatic new skin.
Road Not Taken
No production program followed the Frankfurt debut. Yet Gerry McGovern recycled key proportions—the tapered rear haunches and horizontal lamp clusters—for the 1995 MG F, distilling the EX-E’s visual drama into an affordable, front-engined sports car that finally reached buyers. The concept remains a one-off museum piece today.
