British Motor Corporation's Austin Atlantic arrived in 1949 as Austin’s first post-war export-focused flagship, combining streamlined styling with the promise of open-top motoring for the American market.
History
The A90 Atlantic debuted publicly at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show in London and entered production in early 1949. Austin intended the car to boost overseas sales; initial output was a four-seat convertible built until late 1950. A year later the 1949 show previewed a fixed-head companion, the A90 Atlantic sports saloon—a two-door coupé produced at Longbridge from 1950 to 1952.
Design & Dimensions
Distinctive 1940s pontoon lines and wraparound bumpers gave the Atlantic an unmistakably transatlantic look. Its scale was generous for the era: 4 496 mm long, 1 778 mm wide and 1 524 mm tall, proportions aimed at suiting both British and American tastes.
Variants
Two body styles were offered: an early soft-top convertible badged simply A90 Atlantic, followed by the A90 Atlantic sports saloon, a pillarless two-door coupé that sought to blend sports appeal with family usability.
