Between 1971 and 1978, Leykor built the Austin Apache—a final iteration of BMC’s famous ADO16 lineage. Produced alongside a Spanish-built sister model, this small family car wrapped up a near-decade-long chapter of British engineering before the curtain fell on the range.
History
At the end of 1971, Leykor in South Africa introduced the last of the BMC ADO16 family under the name Austin Apache. Production carried on for seven years, making it the latest-serving model in the line that had also seen the Morris 1100 and MG 1300. Simultaneously, Spanish firm Authi resurrected the platform at its Pamplona plant as the Austin Victoria from 1972 to 1975, extending the car’s footprint into southwestern Europe after BMC’s collapse into British Leyland.
Design & Dimensions
While the body retained the crisp three-box proportions common to the ADO16 series, Leykor gave the Apache a more angular front and revised rear styling to suit the late-1970s market. The compact footprint of 4030 mm by 1535 mm, coupled with a low roof line of 1340 mm and mass of just 844 kg, made it one of the lighter compact saloons of its day.
Legacy
With the Apache’s 1978 exit, the long-running ADO16 platform finally bowed out, officially ending BMC’s medium-car story. The simultaneous Spanish-built Austin Victoria illustrates how the architecture briefly survived beyond British Leyland’s reorganization. Today, surviving examples—mostly in South Africa and Spain—stand as the last tangible links to a line that once defined Britain’s approach to the small family saloon.
