BMC marketed the Austin A40 Countryman as a modest estate, combining post-war utility with early 1950s engineering in a compact steel body.
Background and Launch
Announced hot on the heels of the saloon, the Countryman was part of the A40 family that made its first appearance at the 1947 Paris Motor Show. Although UK journalists critiqued the initial saloon's styling as "conservative", customer demand remained strong and the platform quickly expanded into this practical wagon.
Design and Dimensions
Built on a 3886 mm long footprint and standing 1613 mm tall, the Countryman retained the saloon's 1.2-litre four and its independent front coil spring setup. Large glass lamp lenses and utilitarian tinware gave the estate an honest, workman-like presence on 1950s British roads.
Production and Succession
Rolling out of Longbridge alongside the saloon, the A40 range eclipsed 450,000 units in just five production years. In 1952 the range was replaced entirely by the Austin A40 Somerset, closing the Devon/Countryman lineage.
