Bentley Speed Six

Between 1928 and 1930, Bentley broadened its 6½ Litre line with the Speed Six, a sharply tuned chassis that quickly became the firm's most successful competition car.
Background
The standard Bentley 6½ Litre chassis debuted in 1926 as a large, refined platform for bespoke British coachwork. Demand for higher outright performance—both on road and track—spurred Bentley to develop a hotter derivative: the Speed Six, released in 1928 with increased power and revised gearing.
Motorsport Achievements
In period competition, the Speed Six logged Bentley's greatest pre-war victories, including back-to-back wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1929 and 1930, driven by Woolf Barnato and Glen Kidston. These triumphs entrenched the marque's reputation for speed and endurance just as the world economy was sliding into depression.
Aftermath & Legacy
Production ceased in 1930; the company collapsed later that same year. Rolls-Royce quietly absorbed Bentley in 1931, halting the big six-cylinder line. The subsequent Bentley 4 Litre of 1931–33 marked a spiritual but smaller-capacity successor, yet enthusiasts still regard the Speed Six as the definitive pre-war competition Bentley.
