Bentley Eight

Between 1984 and 1992 Bentley sold the Eight, a de-contented Mulsanne devised to lure new buyers under the £50,000 threshold and quietly became the marque’s volume model.
Creation
Launched as the line-up’s starter Bentley, the Eight shaved £6,000 off the Mulsanne’s sticker by deleting some equipment. A simple wire-mesh radiator grille replaced the traditional vertical slats, giving a cleaner, more understated nose.
Mechanical tweaks
Suspension calibrations were subtly firmed up, giving crisper body control without compromising the expected ride. The changes were mild enough to pass unnoticed in daily use yet sharpened turn-in response for drivers who tried it.
Sales reach
Initially aimed at the UK market, demand quickly outstripped forecasts and exports followed to Europe and the United States, making the Eight an unexpected global sales engine for Bentley during the late 1980s.
Successor
The Brooklands replaced the Eight after 1992, continuing the value-leader strategy with similar underpinnings but resetting the range toward a more modern aesthetic and updated powertrain choices.
