From 1991 to 2003, Bentley built the Continental R: the marque’s first unique-bodied coupé since 1965, and the priciest production car money could buy at launch.
Design
With a 2,045 mm width and 1,463 mm height, the Continental R’s muscular flanks and restrained chrome gave it a post-modern grand-tourer stance, unmistakably distinct from any Rolls-Royce. Hidden beneath the long bonnet were frameless side glass and a distinctive rear haunch that later Bentleys would reference.
Engineering
Under the sculptural skin sat a turbocharged 6.75-litre Bentley V8 channeling output through the first GM 4L80-E automatic transmission ever fitted to the brand. Despite a 2,420 kg kerb weight, real-world tests placed it firmly among the fastest road cars of the early 1990s.
Generations and Variants
Following the 1991 introduction, Bentley spun off the Azure convertible in 1995, maintaining the coupé’s mechanical core while swapping steel for cloth above the beltline. The Brooklands Coupé later emerged as the direct successor, continuing the big Bentley two-door tradition.
Legacy
The Continental R restored Bentley’s engineering autonomy after decades of badge-engineered Rolls-Royce siblings, re-establishing the Winged B as a standalone performance-luxury marque. Values today remain stable, underlining its 1990s status as the ultimate symbol of understated British excess.
