Bentley 4½ Litre

Introduced in the late 1920s, the Bentley 4½ Litre marked the British marque’s first step up in displacement over the existing 3 Litre. With a stronger 4.4-litre engine in a compact 1.74 m-wide chassis, it set the stage both for grand touring luxury and ferocious competition in the form of the famous “Blower”.
Engine and Chassis
At the heart of the 4½ Litre sits a 4.4-litre inline-four derived from the proven 3 Litre architecture. Bentley kept the chassis width to just 1,740 mm, retaining the marque’s short-wheelbase feel while the enlarged powerplants delivered greater torque for high-speed motoring on Europe’s expanding road networks.
The Blower Bentley
Sensing the need for more forced-induction punch, Sir Henry Birkin commissioned a supercharged racing variant nicknamed the Blower Bentley. A large Roots-type blower protruded from the grille, feeding an up-rated 4½ Litre engine tuned for endurance events. Though never racing for the works team, the Blower became the era’s most recognisable trackside contender.
Legacy
Production ceased when Bentley Motors pivoted to the Mark V, yet the 4½ Litre’s blend of robust engineering and motorsport pedigree forged the brand’s early identity. Surviving examples—road or Blower—remain fixtures at concours and historic rallies, cementing its place among pre-war British classics.
