Unveiled in September 1933 shortly after the death of Henry Royce, the Bentley 3½ Litre was the first all-new Bentley to appear under Rolls-Royce ownership and re-established the marque in the luxury-car market during the mid-1930s.
History
Bentley Motors Ltd. introduced the 3½ Litre at the Olympia Motor Show in London in September 1933, only two years after Rolls-Royce had bought the financially troubled Bentley brand. The model was conceived to bridge pre-war sporting character with new levels of refinement expected by Rolls-Royce clientele, reviving Bentley’s presence in the full-sized luxury segment.
Design & Engineering
Engineers specified a robust 3.5-litre straight-six engine that delivered brisk performance while maintaining Rolls-Royce standards of smoothness and silence. The chassis employed a separate ladder frame with leaf-spring suspension, allowing more than 50 independent coachbuilders to supply bespoke bodywork ranging from sleek sports saloons to open tourers.
Legacy
Production ran continuously until 1939, when war halted civilian manufacturing. The 3½ Litre formed the basis for later derivatives and directly influenced the Bentley Mark V, ensuring the survival of the Bentley name through the difficult 1930s and setting the template for post-war luxury Bentleys.
