Audi Type SS

Rolling onto European roads in 1929, the Audi Type SS was the company’s immediate follow-up to the Type R “Imperator.” It stands out as Audi’s early attempt to combine spacious luxury with the smooth muscle of a straight-eight engine.
Design & Engineering
The Type SS is decisively large: almost five metres long, nearly 1.8 metres wide and 2100 kg in weight. Its straight-eight was tuned to push the heavy coach-built body to a respectable 110 km/h on the autobahns of the late 1920s.
Generations & Legacy
Built only from 1929 on, the Type SS superseded the six-cylinder Type R “Imperator.” No direct successor followed—production was cut short by the economic downturn of the early 1930s, making surviving examples rare records of Audi’s pre-war engineering ambitions.
