History and Origins
Audi launched the RS6 in 2002 as a twin-turbo reinvention of the already potent A6 line. Positioned as the direct replacement for the S6 Plus, the first C5-generation RS6 re-established Audi’s performance flagship at a time when Mercedes-AMG and BMW M were rapidly advancing their own midsize offerings.
Engineering Philosophy
Each generation is engineered by Audi Sport GmbH (formerly quattro GmbH), the in-house high-performance subsidiary responsible for extracting far more output from the standard A6 platform. All RS6 models pair heavily revised powertrains with Quattro all-wheel drive, adaptive air suspension, and—after the C6 generation—bespoke wheel designs and carbon-ceramic brake options.
Variants Over Time
The RS6 has spanned four major chassis codes since 2002: C5 (2002–2004), C6 (2008–2010), C7 (2013–2018), and the current C8 generation (launched 2019).
