Slotting above the outgoing B2 Coupé, the Audi Coupé B3 arrived in the late 1980s as Ingolstadt’s fresh two-door answer to the wave of compact German grand-tourers. Its clean, flush-glass look and galvanised steel shell helped Audi move upscale before the A5 lineage took over two decades later.
Design & Dimensions
Styled in the same wind-cheating idiom as the contemporaneous Audi 80/90, the B3 Coupé lost the chrome and pop-up lights of its predecessor for a monobox silhouette that reduced drag to below 0.30 Cd. The unadorned shoulder line and integrated bumpers gave it a cohesive look that still reads tidy today.
The new body also grew: with a 2568 mm wheelbase and 4366 mm overall length, it was longer and wider (1716 mm) than the B2, yet its 1375 mm roofline sat lower for a more planted stance on the road.
Engineering
Built on the evolved B3 platform that underpinned the Audi 80/90, the Coupé inherited front-wheel-drive architecture but offered Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive as an option—unusual in its segment at the time. A fully galvanised body provided a ten-year corrosion warranty, a first for Audi’s two-door range.
The suspension deployed MacPherson struts up front and a torsion-beam rear layout, later supplemented on sported variants by anti-roll bars and gas-charged dampers.
Generations & Legacy
Sold from 1988 through 1996 with only subtle facelifts, the Coupé B3 never gained a cabrio partner, instead focusing on two- and four-door siblings. It bowed out before the 2007 debut of the Audi A5, which explicitly carried the grand-touring torch that the B3 had kept alive for nearly a decade.
