Audi Cabriolet

Audi’s first series-production four-seat convertible arrived in 1991 as a soft-top derivative of the front-drive Coupe, bringing open-air motoring to the marque’s Audi 80 lineage and setting the template for later cabriolets.
Origins & Timeline
Launching at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show, the Audi Cabriolet was built on the Type 89 platform and shared its core architecture with the Coupe. Production continued through 2000, overlapping the introduction of the subsequent B6 generation that created the modern-day Audi A4 Cabriolet.
Design & Dimensions
A cleanly styled, four-seat soft-top with minimal visual clutter, the Cabriolet measured 4370 mm long, 1720 mm wide and 1380 mm tall. The manually folding canvas hood (an optional electric top arrived from 1994) stowed beneath a color-matched flush tonneau cover that preserved the car’s unbroken shoulder line and distinct coupe-like profile when closed.
Legacy
Although compact sales volumes, the Cabriolet validated the market case for four-seat Audis without fixed roofs and directly influenced its successor, the Audi A4 B6 Cabriolet. In doing so, it anchored Audi’s modern convertible portfolio before the era of retractable hard-tops.
