The Audi A4 B6, launched for the 2000 model year, handed the baton from the first-generation B5 and defined the compact executive segment for Audi throughout the early 2000s until it was replaced by the B7 in late 2004 for Europe and 2005 for North America.
History
Showing up at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show and reaching dealers the same year, the B6 broadened Audi’s compact executive reach, replacing the B5 with a cleaner, more muscular translation of Ingolstadt design language. Sales ran through 2004 in Europe and 2005-2006 in other regions, when it was succeeded by the evolutionary B7.
Design
Exterior lines were crisper and tauter than the B5, tying the A4 closer to the then-new A6 and flagship A8. A flatter beltline and integrated horizontal grille slats gave the B6 a wider stance, while inside Audi introduced larger pictogram climate controls and soft-touch materials lifted from its larger siblings.
Variants & Updates
The B6 platform served both saloon and Avant wagon bodies, and added the four-door Cabriolet range in 2002. Engines spanned a broad spectrum from a 1.6-litre base petrol to the 4.2-litre V8 in the S4, each routing power through front-wheel drive or the optional quattro system.
