The Audi 90 arrived in the early 1980s as the up-market sibling to the Audi 80, bringing added spec and subtle style to the compact executive segment.
History
Introduced in 1984, the Audi 90 formed part of Audi’s well-regarded B-range family, positioned just above the contemporary 80 in the lineup. It retained the same fundamental front-wheel-drive or optional quattro four-wheel-drive architecture of its sibling while carving out a slightly more up-market niche aimed at buyers wanting comfort and technology without stepping up to the larger 100/200.
Design and Positioning
Compared with the 80, the 90 used a subtly re-styled front end featuring a full-width radiator grille that gave the car a wider, more planted look. Inside, richer materials, power equipment and driver aids—such as integrated trip computer and advanced audio—underlined Audi’s intent to challenge mid-size premium competitors from BMW and Mercedes.
Generations and Evolution
The first Audi 90 designation was applied to the B2-chassis facelift (1984–1986) in Europe, followed by a dedicated North-American market version (1984–1987). When the B3-generation 80 debuted for model-year 1987, the 90 continued as the top trim until the arrival of the Audi 80/Coupé 20V models phased it out. No direct replacement followed; its feature set was eventually absorbed into the refreshed 80 and later the A4.
