Generations & Variants
Four distinct generations evolved the model across 30 years, beginning with Audi’s move away from the earlier F103 line. From 1973 onward the sedan and estate (badged "Avant") rode on shared platform architecture with the Volkswagen Passat, while parallel coupé and convertible derivatives—never officially labeled "80"—used the same engineering base.

Riding on a 2.6-meter wheelbase within compact exterior dimensions of 4.48 m length, 1.60 m width and 1.36 m height, the 80’s proportions fit European garages and urban streets while maintaining a formal three-box profile befitting its executive positioning.
Successor
With the line retired after 1996, the directly evolved Audi A4 took over the segment, carrying forward the longitudinal-engine layout, front-wheel or quattro four-wheel drive options, and reputation for restrained styling that originated in the 80 series.
