Arriving in 1990, the Audi 100 C4 delivered a thoroughly re-engineered body and platform that reset expectations for executive sedans while laying the groundwork for Audi’s later A6 lineage. This fourth-generation Audi 100 was the last to wear the historic “100” nameplate.
Design & Dimensions
The C4’s crisp, flush glazing and tight shut-lines gave it a remarkable drag coefficient of just 0.30, an achievement that slipped beneath the radar of mainstream reviews. Measuring 4 792 mm long and 1 778 mm wide, the C4 was longer and marginally wider than its already-square C3 predecessor yet looked leaner thanks to integrated bumpers and a lower roofline.
Generations & Transition
Produced from 1990 through 1994, the Audi 100 C4 bridged the gap between the classic C-chassis cars and the forthcoming Audi A6. In 1994 Audi rebranded the entire range as the A6 (still on the C4 platform), marking the end of the 100 name after 27 years of continuous use.
Legacy
The chassis architecture and body shell introduced on the C4 100 formed the basis for the first-generation Audi A6, while its lowered drag numbers and refined packaging became benchmarks in the mid-size executive segment. As production wrapped, enthusiasts noted the C4 as the final chapter of the “real” Audi 100 badge.
