Audi 100 C3

Between 1982 and 1991, the Audi 100 C3 swapped the crisp lines of the C2 for rounded aerodynamics and light-weight zinc-coated bodywork, resetting expectations of how executive sedans could combine efficiency, comfort and cabin space.
Design
The C3’s monocoque shell delivered a benchmark cd of 0.30, achieved through flush glazing, a near-flat under-floor and a wedge-only belt line. At 4,792 mm long and 1,422 mm tall, the body sat surprisingly low while retaining 1,814 mm width for three-abreast rear seating. Total skin weight dropped thanks to hot-dip galvanising that protected against corrosion for eight model-years.
Generations & evolution
Introduced in late 1982 as a 1983 model, the Audi 100 C3 ran until 1991, overlapping its predecessor C2 for less than a year before itself giving way to the C4. Over that span the range grew from one initial saloon to include Avant wagons and 2-door Coupé variants, a minimal production facelift arriving only in 1988 to integrate projector headlamps and larger bumpers.
Legacy
The C3’s aerodynamics and anti-corrosion program pushed the entire European executive segment toward galvanised steel and wind-tunnel development. Its spacious, upright cabin drew family buyers who might otherwise have chosen a larger-class car, cementing Audi’s reputation for engineering-led rational design.
