Aston Martin Rapid E represents the British marque’s leap into electrification, previewing its first battery-powered sports car for the upcoming decade. First announced as a concept in 2015, the limited-production four-door aims to translate the brand’s grand-tourer virtues into silent, zero-tailpipe-emission performance.
From Vision to Production
Originally shown at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show as the ‘Rapide E’ concept, the project paired Aston Martin with Williams Advanced Engineering. After several delays and shifting corporate priorities, final development shifted in-house. A production cap of 155 units—marking Aston’s historic move from petrol combustion to EV—was confirmed for 2020, with hand-assembly taking place at the company’s St. Athan facility in Wales.
Design & Technology
Beyond its familiar Rapide silhouette, the Rapid E replaces the V12 with floor-mounted lithium-ion cells supplied by Hyperbat Limited. A twin-motor rear-drive layout delivers a targeted 602 hp and 700 lb-ft, channelled through a single-speed transmission to preserve the brand’s rear-wheel-drive character. Exterior cooling vents, under-body aero and subtle blue-finished badging signal the silent powertrain beneath.
Production Reality
Only 155 examples will reach customers globally, sold through Aston’s Q bespoke division before parent company Aston Martin Lagonda re-allocates electric resources to the incoming Lagonda brand. Each car is built on the same Welsh line that previously produced the DBX prototype and Lagonda Vision concepts, ensuring strict low-volume craftsmanship.
