Debuted in spring 2019, the Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept previewed the Italian marque’s first compact SUV, signaling a bold electrified direction for the storied Milanese brand.
Concept Purpose
Alfa Romeo unveiled the Tonale Concept at the Geneva International Motor Show to preview its entry into the fast-growing premium compact-SUV segment. Designed as a hybrid plug-in with classic Alfa proportions—short overhangs, long hood, and ‘telephone-dial’ wheel cues—the show car acted as a design and technology manifesto for the production model that followed two years later.
Design Language
Drawing from both the 1968 33 Stradale and the classic Alfetta, the concept married muscular SUV stance with classic coupe lines. Narrow LED headlamps, the trademark scudetto grille, and floating “3+3” taillamps created an unmistakable Alfa silhouette while hinting at the electrified architecture beneath the sculpted panels.
Heir to a Name
When the production Tonale reached showrooms in 2022, it carried over the concept’s overall shape, interior themes, and plug-in hybrid philosophy, marking the first step in a five-year electrification plan for Alfa Romeo and completing the brand’s SUV lineup below the Stelvio.
