The Maserati GranSport emerged as a high-performance evolution of the Coupé and Spyder line built from 2001 to 2007, serving as the final performance expression of the 4200 GT platform before it gave way to the GranTurismo.
Origins & Timeline
Based directly on the Maserati 4200 GT (also known simply as the Coupé or Spyder when launched in 2001), the GranSport debuted midway through the seven-year production run. While the basic Coupé/Spyder range ended in 2007, the GranSport name signified added aerodynamic and chassis refinements focused on sharper grand-touring dynamics.
Design & Dimensions
Retaining the 1810 mm width and 1275 mm height of the donor Coupé, the GranSport introduced more assertive front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a small trunk-lid spoiler to reduce lift at autobahn speeds. The compact two-seater form wrapped a longer, lower aluminum and steel body over the same multi-link suspension architecture as the 4200 GT.
Evolution & Legacy
Positioned as the highest-performance derivative before the GranTurismo arrived to replace the entire line, the GranSport gathered all mechanical upgrades developed during the Coupé/Spyder program. It now stands as the last Maserati to use the sonorous dry-sump 4.2-litre Ferrari-assembled V8, marking the transition from the 4200 GT era to the acclaimed, all-new GranTurismo generation in 2007.
