Maserati A6G

Born as an evolution of the Maserati A6, the A6G carried forward the Bologna marque’s ambitious post-war twin-cam straight-six formula yet added a fresh Gran Turismo identity that would shape Maserati’s future two-seaters. Produced during the first half of the 1950s, it formed the bridge between the company’s early racers and the celebrated A6G 2000 successor.
From A6 to Gran Turismo
The A6G retained the Maserati A6’s chassis layout but was subtly stretched and strengthened to accommodate new coachbuilt bodies. Maserati’s engineers revised the 1.5-litre twin-cam inline-six, increasing reliability and torque for fast road use while still allowing competitive appearances in sports-car events. Delivered as rolling chassis to Italy’s finest carrozzerie—including Zagato, Pinin Farina and Frua—the A6G gave wealthy clients a blend of race-bred technology and bespoke design.
Hand-built dimensions and weight
Completed coupés and spyders measured 4420 mm long, just 1560 mm wide and stood a low 1350 mm, keeping the centre of gravity close to the asphalt. At barely 1100 kg fully trimmed, the car was lighter than many competitors, aiding its agility on Alpine passes and endurance circuits alike.
Legacy and successor
By refining the A6 concept into a usable grand tourer, the A6G laid the groundwork for the enlarged-engined Maserati A6G 2000 introduced in 1954. The platform evolution ultimately culminated in the 3500 GT of 1957, making the A6G a pivotal link in Maserati’s transition from boutique racer builder to series-production GT manufacturer.
