Slotting between rear-wheel-drive European roots and Hyundai’s modern front-drive future, the 1980s-era Hyundai Stellar replaced the Ford Cortina in several markets and previewed the Sonata era that followed.
Background & Positioning
Hyundai launched the Stellar as a direct successor to the Ford Cortina, inheriting its rear-wheel-drive platform but wrapping it in fresh sheetmetal and a Hyundai-developed interior. The move filled a critical gap in the Korean maker’s line-up at a time when it was transitioning away from Ford partnerships toward fully branded models. The Stellar’s span coincided with Hyundai’s rapid rise in Australasia, Europe and select Asian markets before the Sonata took over momentum in the early 1990s.
Design & Dimensions
At 4556 mm long, 1716 mm wide and 1372 mm high, the Stellar sat neatly within the contemporary mid-size saloon class. Clean, angular lines echoed both European and emerging Korean styling cues, while a spacious cabin offered six-seater bench accommodation up front on base trims and five-seater bucket-seat variants higher up the range.
