Origins
Built on the same unibody platform as the Tucson crossover, the Santa Cruz is Hyundai’s first dedicated compact pickup. The company skipped traditional ladder-frame development, aiming the model at urban and suburban drivers rather than heavy-duty buyers.
Design & dimensions
Its car-like proportions—longer, wider, and slightly lower than most midsize trucks—allow easy parking while still offering a 4-foot cargo bed. The design combines SUV styling cues with integrated bed lighting, lockable under-floor storage, and standard all-wheel-drive availability.
North American debut
The Santa Cruz launched exclusively in North American markets, slotting below full-size pickups and setting a precedent for Hyundai’s expansion into lifestyle-oriented pickups. Early reviews praised its maneuverability and ride quality, earned from its Tucson-derived suspension.
