Marketed to first-time buyers across emerging markets, the Hyundai Reina is a small four-door sedan that began rolling out of Beijing Hyundai’s brand-new Chongqing factory in September 2017. Positioned just below the Verna in Hyundai’s local lineup, it was tasked with capturing the price-sensitive end of China’s still-booming new-car market.
Production strategy
Rather than tapping an existing plant, Hyundai invested in a green-field site at Chongqing to build the Reina. This southwestern hub lowered shipping costs to China’s interior provinces and underlined the brand’s commitment to series-production expansion in emerging regions. All Reinas for the domestic market are produced under the Beijing Hyundai joint-venture structure.
Size & packaging
At 4 300 mm long, 1 700 mm wide and 1 400 mm tall, the Reina is unmistakably a city-oriented subcompact sedan. Four conventional doors and a three-box silhouette keep it acceptable to family buyers, while tight overhangs help maximise interior volume within strict exterior dimensions.
Market positioning
Hyundai slots the Reina below the better-trimmed Verna, pricing it for young professionals and first-time car owners. By limiting standard equipment and simplifying option packages, the model delivers modern Hyundai design at a headline price that competes directly with low-cost domestic brands.
