Built specifically for European roads and tastes, the Hyundai i40 arrived in 2011 as Hyundai’s answer to the Ford Mondeo and VW Passat family-car class, lasting until its quiet retirement in 2019.
Origins & Market Focus
Launched at the 2011 Barcelona Motor Show, the i40 was developed in parallel with the global Hyundai Sonata yet tuned for Europe. Hyundai positioned it to fill the gap left when the Sonata shifted toward U.S. and Asian markets, giving European buyers a lower roofline (1,470 mm) and sports-wagon option not available elsewhere.
Design & Styling
Styling followed Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” language: a bold hexagonal grille, razor-sharp headlamps, and crisp creases along broad shoulders that stretched the body to 1,815 mm wide. The estate variant featured a steeply raked tailgate for a coupe-wagon blend, maximizing 1,719-litre cargo space with the rear seats folded.
Engineering & Replacements
Underpinning the i40 was Hyundai-Kia’s Y6 platform—short-wheelbase relative to Sonata YF—adapted with stiffer suspension and European-tuned steering. After 2019, Hyundai withdrew the i40 along with the ix35, focusing EU sales on the new Tucson and the fast-growing i30 range; no direct successor carries the i40 badge.
