Hyundai HB20

Launched in 2012 by Hyundai Motor Company at the company’s Brazilian plant, the Hyundai HB20 is the first model ever engineered exclusively for South American buyers and still confined almost entirely to that continent.
Origins and Brazilian roots
The HB20 name stands for "Hyundai Brasil 20"—a direct nod to the host country and Hyundai’s expectation of a 20 % market share. From day one every sheet-metal panel and power-train calibration was done in Brazil, allowing the car to run on pure gasoline or locally popular ethanol blends without modification.
Regional roll-out
For its first four years the HB20 stayed inside Brazil. Export sales finally opened in 2016 with Paraguay and Uruguay, followed seven years later by Mexico and Colombia. Argentina joined the list in early 2024, yet the car is still not offered in Hyundai’s home Korean market or in Europe.
Engineering brief
Subcompact size and flex-fuel hardware have been constants from launch. Engines range across naturally aspirated 1.0- and 1.6-litre options tuned to deliver comparable performance whether the tank contains E100 ethanol or standard gasoline—critical in Brazil’s price-sensitive fuel landscape.
