Hyundai briefly tested the waters of mass-market EVs with the BlueOn, a petite five-door hatchback built in 2009–2010 that foreshadowed South Korea’s coming wave of affordable electric cars.
Origins & Purpose
The BlueOn started life as 30 hand-built evaluation cars dispatched to fleets and government agencies late in 2010. Hyundai treated the program as an R&D sandbox rather than a commercial launch, gathering real-world battery and powertrain data while delaying public sales until late 2012.
Engineering Snapshot
With an 87-mile quoted range and a 130 km/h (81 mph) ceiling, the BlueOn aligned with early-EV norms. Specifications such as motor output or battery chemistry were not released, underscoring its low-volume research role.
Legacy
Although retail buyers never lined up for the BlueOn, Hyundai rolled lessons from the pilot into later Ioniq and Kona Electric models. The program marked one of the first systematic EV trials on South Korean roads, paving the way for mainstream adoption.
