Between 1976 and 1977, Holden replaced the HJ with the short-lived HX series—an interim model that tightened emissions ahead of the HZ while lowering visual chrome.
History
Released in July 1976 and phased out by October 1977, the HX bridged Holden’s HJ and HZ ranges. Its primary mission was to satisfy Australia’s new ADR27A emissions rules without major drivetrain re-engineering.
Design Changes
Visual tweaks were modest: smaller grilles, lowered bumper bars, and fewer brightwork strips distinguished the HX from its predecessor. Inside, revised upholstery fabrics and colorways aimed to freshen the cabin.
Capability
Engine choices carried over largely unchanged from the HJ—sixes and eights both detuned via leaner carburation and altered timing to meet the stricter pollution standards. Transmission and chassis specifications stayed consistent, maintaining rear-drive architecture across sedan, wagon, utility, and panel van body styles.
Successor
With scarcely 15 months on the market, the HX stepped aside for the Holden HZ in late 1977, which introduced Radial Tuned Suspension and further emissions refinements.
