Holden Camira

From 1982 to 1989, Holden offered the Camira as its answer to the world-car trend, replacing the Torana and ushering in the brand's first J-body mid-sizer developed alongside Europe’s Opel Ascona C.
Global Roots
Built on General Motors’ third “global” J-body platform, the Camira shared core architecture with the Opel Ascona C. Engineers adapted the European package for Australian roads, swapping sheet metal and trim while retaining the lightweight 1 038 kg structure.
Model Chain
The Camira arrived to close the chapter started by the larger Holden Torana and hand its segment off to the Toyota-based Holden Apollo after 1989. The brief seven-year run marked a transition phase between distinctly Australian designs and GM’s increasing platform consolidation.
Name & Meaning
Holden drew the name from an Aboriginal word meaning “wind,” a nod to aerodynamic aspirations and a fresh naming identity separate from the numeric torque-based monikers common in earlier Holden lines.
