Sold by GM's Australian arm from 1989 to 1997, the Holden Apollo replaced the locally engineered Camira with a badge-engineered Toyota Camry. The model line bridged two generations of Camry while serving as Holden's step between the Camira and the later Vectra.
History
Holden introduced the Apollo in 1989 as a direct successor to the Holden Camira, in effect ending Australian development of mid-size cars in favor of Toyota production. Tied to a broader supply partnership, it allowed Holden to field a competitive model range while the company focused on larger Commodore variants. Production and marketing ceased in 1997, making way for the imported Holden Vectra.
Generations & Variants
The Apollo mirrored two Camry generations: the first based on the V20 Camry (sold locally as JK from 1989 and facelifted JL from 1991), and the second on the XV10 Camry (recoded as JM in 1993 and refreshed JP in 1996). Shared doors, glass, mechanicals and most of the interior left Holden free to tweak only grilles, light clusters and trim badges to distinguish each series.
