First unveiled in 2016, the Geely Emgrand GL serves as the sedan pillar of Geely’s Emgrand product series, anchoring the Chinese maker’s push into affordable family mobility. Today it survives as the heavily revised Emgrand L (2022–present), benchmarked for interior space more usually found on cars one class up.
History
The Emgrand GL was introduced in 2016 as Geely Auto’s dedicated compact sedan positioned between the smaller Emgrand and the larger Borui. In 2022 the model was thoroughly re-skinned, rebadged Emgrand L, and repositioned to meet tightened Chinese emissions and safety standards while retaining the same underlying platform and wheelbase.
Design & Dimensions
Its exterior footprint—4 725 mm long, 1 802 mm wide, 1 478 mm tall—delivers genuine three-box proportions rare in the segment, allowing a long rear overhang that frees up 520 litres of boot volume. Inside, the horizontal dashboard and full-width air-vent graphic were carried over to the L facelift with slimmer bezel screens and improved soft-touch plastics.
Generations
Two clear iterations exist: the original Emgrand GL (2016-2021) and the reworked Emgrand L (2022-). The L adopts new LED lighting signatures, Geely’s latest 1.5 TD engine family, and an electronic-shift DCT, while keeping the basic chassis architecture and rear suspension unchanged.
