Born in 1937, the Lancia Aprilia introduced wind-tunnel science to everyday motoring, becoming the first mass saloon to tame air itself.
Design & Aerodynamics
Working with Battista Farina and the Polytechnic University of Turin, Lancia sculpted the Aprilia’s monocoque body inside a wind tunnel, arriving at a Cd of just 0.47—a figure many modern cars still envy. The glassy, fast-back form produced the Pertiera Berlinetta Aerodinamica that stunned visitors to the Paris show in 1936.
Technical Overview
Measuring 3 960 mm long and 1 455 mm tall at just 900 kg, the Aprilia combined lightweight construction with independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes, advancing Lancia’s reputation for innovation over the traditional leaf-spring designs of the era.
Model Lineage
Replacing the Lancia Artena in 1937, the Aprilia served as the marque’s mid-size offering until 1949, after which the more compact Lancia Appia carried forward its engineering spirit.
