Produced from 1987 to 1998, the Alfa Romeo 164 was the brand’s first large front-wheel-drive executive saloon and its first car co-developed within the Type Four consortium with Saab, Lancia and Fiat. It rebooted Alfa’s presence in the premium sedan segment and set the template for later models.
Design & Development
Pininfarina clothed the 164 in crisply aero lines that created a drag coefficient of 0.30—remarkably low for the era. Underneath, the Type Four platform underpinned the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Saab 9000, yet Alfa gave the 164 its own rear suspension geometry and engine bay to accommodate the Busso V6 and twin-spark fours.
Performance & Specifications
With a 4554 mm length, 1760 mm width and kerb weight from 1,510 kg, the 164 sported engines from 2.0-litre twin-cam fours to the range-topping 3.0-litre 24-valve V6 that delivered up to 230 PS in later QV form. Front-wheel drive dominated, though the Q4 variant introduced permanent all-wheel drive in 1993.
Generations & Legacy
Only one generation was produced during an eleven-year run, but facelifted Series I (1987-1992) and Series II (1992-1998) modernised bumpers, dashboards and powertrains. The 164’s interior electronics and platform architecture previewed technology seen in the later 166, while motorsports appearances—racing in the Italian Superturismo series—kept the Alfa spirit alive.
