Built in no more than four or five copies during 1937, the Delahaye Type 145 transformed from pure Grand Prix racer into one of the rarest French luxury automobiles ever made.
History
Delahaye produced a tiny batch of Type 145 chassis in 1937 expressly for competition use. After wartime hiatus, at least three of these strictly mechanical racers were re-bodied as opulent passenger road cars, creating a unique blend of race pedigree and grand touring elegance that survives to this day.
Design & Engineering
Under the lengthened bonnet sits a 12-cylinder 60-degree V engine engineered for the stresses of high-speed circuits. The chassis retained dual-purpose traits—lightweight ladder frame, independent front suspension and drum brakes—allowing bespoke coachbuilders to clothe the mechanical core in luxurious bodywork for post-war road use.
Legacy
With perhaps only one example still maintaining its original racing configuration, the Type 145 serves as both Delahaye’s final pre-war motorsport statement and a rare French predecessor to the modern super-GT. Each surviving car is now regarded as an irreplaceable artifact of 1930s automotive craftsmanship.
